28 May Hickson Road Arts Group

Come along to the next meeting of the Hickson Road Arts Group on the 28th of May from 2-4pm; a peer discussion group by and for artists with disability supported by Accessible Arts.

This month, visual artist Keith Rutherford will be speaking to us about his artistic practice and career highlights. We will also be discussing the difficulties artists with disability face in being paid for their work and will share information about upcoming events and opportunities.

The Hickson Road Arts Group is for artists working across all art forms and at any level of their careers. It is a safe space for artists with disability to meet and connect with other artists whilst hearing about opportunities and developing new knowledge and skills.

To RSVP for this event email info@aarts.net.au or call 02 9251 6499. Please advise of any access requirements by Monday the 20th of May.

Below is some general information about these meetings.

If you’re an artist (visual artist, musician, writer, or other) living with disability and looking to make new connections, keep informed about opportunities, and develop your skills, then the Hickson Road Arts Group could be for you. Artists from all art forms with all levels of abilities are welcome.

What’s the group about?

It is a supportive environment in which artists can speak about their artistic practice, share ideas for current and future work, and gain insights into a diverse range of arts practices through participation in skills-sharing opportunities.

There might even be the possibility of attending performances and exhibitions together.

What’s happened at previous meetings?

At one of our last events, a few members brought along samples of their work for people to see. Winston Stearn shared a few of his photographic prints. Shelley Kay brought along her artwork My Order Board for people to not only see but to experience too.

Participants are thus encouraged to bring examples of their work to share with the group during the meeting.

How often does the Hickson Road Arts Group meet?

Usually the group meets every two months – the last one this year has been brought forward to avoid conflicts with other events. These are the dates for the rest of the 2019;

Tuesday 9 July 2-4pm

Tuesday 8 October 2-4pm

Tuesday 19 November 2-4pm

Who is welcome at the group?

Any artist who identifies as living with disability is welcome to come to group meetings. The invitation is extended to artists who are practicing any art form with any level of experience.

Is there a cost to attending the Hickson Road Arts Group?

There is no cost to attend the meetings.

What about access?

The Arts Exchange is wheelchair accessible. If you have other access needs, please let us know when you book and we will do our best to accommodate you. In addition, staff will be on hand to provide some assistance as and when required.

What if I can’t come every time?

People are welcome to come along when they are able. There is no expectation that people come to every meeting.
