Outsider Artists Exhibition: Works by over 60 artists!
The Outsider Artists Exhibition is currently on at Project Contemporary Artspace in Wollongong.
What’s the Outsider Artists Exhibition
It’s an exhibition featuring the visual art of over sixty artists with disability.
All the artists have been involved in all aspects of the artistic process. This gives them a sense of empowerment and raises their self-esteem which, in turn, improves overall health, interpersonal skills and personal development.
For the Outsider Artists to have an exhibition, and be able to sell their artworks in a public space like Project Contemporary Artspace, validates their entire artistic process.
The exhibition gives artists the opportunity to see their art hanging in a prominent location. Inviting family, carers and the community to view their exhibited work completes the artistic cycle.
Who are the Outsider Artists?
The Outsider Artists come from a wide range of culturally diverse backgrounds and are of many different ages. While many of the artists have a physical, psychological or neurological disability, anyone in the community can become an Outsider Artist.
What the artists share is a desire to explore their creativity, learn new techniques, experiment with different artistic mediums and most of all, have fun.
Who supports the artists?
This is a project of Greenacres and involves individuals attending weekly art classes.
The artists are supported by Victoria Velozo, an artist who has exhibited internationally and who has qualifications in psychology and creative arts.
The process and results
Unlike conventional art classes, Victoria works with artists individually. Each artist is encouraged to discover the creative style, medium and technique that works best for them.
This results in the eclectic range of artworks including painting, drawing, storyboards, wall-hangings, mosaic, ceramics and sculpture.
