Calamity Jane: Captioned Performance
There is a performance of Calamity Jane with mobile device captioning coming up.
Where and when?
It’s in the Upstairs Theatre at Belvoir St. Theatre (25 Belvoir Street in Surry Hills, NSW) on Saturday 22 September at 2:00 pm.
Can I book now?
Yes! Just visit the Belvoir St. Theatre website right here.
What is mobile device captioning?
Mobile device captioning is for Deaf and hard of hearing patrons. The captions detail actors’ dialogue, adlibs, asides, song lyrics along with music descriptions and other sound effects. These captions appear on the screen of the patron’s mobile device.
To receive the service, patrons need to download (there is a small purchase price) the Go Theatrical! App onto their iPhone or Android device. Some mobile devices will also be available for hire from the Belvoir St. Theatre box office. However, these are limited in number and must be booked in advance by calling 02 9699 3444.
What’s Calamity Jane about?
This critically acclaimed and outrageously funny production stars Virginia Gay (Winners & Losers, All Saints) as Calamity Jane and is based on the 1950s musical tale of the Wild West and the search for love. Doris Day played the starring role in the original film.
Calamity Jane at Belvoir is a pared-back, madcap, hilarious rendition. Jane is all swagger – a rough rider and full of defiance – but, when it comes to love, she’s calamity in more ways than one.
This was a smash hit at the Hayes Theatre (Potts Point, NSW) last year. There’s a bar on stage, a single piano, and audiences get to sit on stage if they want. We’ve been told this production is brilliant!
Calamity Jane is presented in association with One Eyed Man Productions with Neglected Musicals and Hayes Theatre Co.
It’s adapted by Ronald Hanmer and Phil Park from the stage play by Charles K. Freeman, and directed by Richard Carroll.
Tickets are priced from $37 – $72.
