Marky Mark in a First Flight Crew T-Shirt
First Flight Crew (FFC) will make their first appearance for 2010 at Platform 3, Sydney’s largest hip hop festival. Platform 3 is an annual showcase event that highlights some of Australia’s best DJs, MCs, beat boxers, breakers and graffiti artists all taking place at CarriageWorks contemporary arts centre, Eveleigh.
The eight piece hip hop crew from all over Sydney is managed by Accessible Arts’ Creative Programs Coordinator, Alison Richardson and was formed in 2009 as a result of a series of workshops with Victorian based music organisation Club Wild, further development with Powerhouse Youth Theatre and all under the guidance of hip hop artist, Morganics.
Representing people with disability, the crew perform original material at gigs, fundraisers and public events. They are currently developing their live routine with Morganics for their performance at Platform 3 on Saturday March 20th, 2010.
“Performing at Platform 3 will raise the profile of the First Flight Crew directly within the hip hop community. It is about reaching new audiences outside of the disability sector so they can all experience the talent, spunk and attitude of the First Flighters” says Alison Richardson, Creative Programs Coordinator at Accessible Arts.
FFC will also be performing at Accessible Arts’ national Arts Activated Conference on Friday 26 March 2010 at the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney.
To raise their profile and to raise money to support the development of the crew the FFC have designed and printed a limited number of T-shirts that are available for purchase for $20. To order a FFC T-shirt or to find out more about booking the crew to perform contact Alison Richardson, Creative Programs Coordinator tel: 9251 6499 extension 112 or arichardson@aarts.net.au

The First Flight Crew had their fifth gig at ‘Comedy Is King’ at The Westin Hotel, Martin Place, Sydney in late September 09. This event was a major fundraiser night for Down Syndrome NSW and the Crew were invited to open the evening the only way they know how – with break dancing and beat boxing.
Marky Mark, one of the Crew, got the night started with his solo piece Marky Mark in da House, followed by the whole seven piece outfit raising the roof with their song, Funky Air Style Guitar Noises. Nam and Marky then broke out into some beat boxing wooing the crowd with their scratching and beats.
MC Richard Wilkins commented on “how fantastic” the performance was and Marky Mark got busy handing out his autograph to his lady fans and collecting his shirt, which he had thrown into the audience during the routine.
The whole night was inspired by comedian Brain Doyle whose five-year-old grandson has Down Syndrome. He rallied together his entertaining mates such as Glenn Shorrock, Leo Sayer, Sean Kramer, Vince Sorrenti and Australia’s Electric Cowboy Greg Anderson, to entertain a 300 strong crowd. With an appeal, an auction and ticket sales the whole night raised over $70, 000 for Down Syndrome NSW.
The First Flight Crew with the assistance of a grant from the Jacqui McCoy Trust Fund, are launching into a creative phase of new material including songs, routines and the possibility of a film clip. And they’ll be available for gigs.

Accessible Arts Western Sydney & Powerhouse Youth Theatre (PYT) have partnered up on the Hip Hop Project. The beginnings of this project took place last year with Club Wild which led the group to perform at The Beach Rd Hotel in Bondi. This year most of those hip hoppers have returned, along with a few newbies, to take part in a two day song creation workshop at PYT with Aussie B-boy Morganics. They created an original song called Funky Guitar Style Noises which they performed over the week end at two of Western Sydney’s biggest Youth Week events, The ‘Burbs in Blacktown & Bring It On! in Fairfield.
Keep an eye out for these guys as there will be more to come! For any further information on the hip hop crew contact Alison at arichardson@aarts.net.au or 9251 6499 (ext 5) or Claudia at claudia@pyt.com.au or 9724 6077.
