Ten participants from the Tuesday Night Club in Blacktown took part in a free workshop with musician and facilitator, Mark Shepherd as part of Accessible Arts’ Open Program. After a pizza dinner to line the stomach and to warm up the throat the group got hands on with the Special Access Kit to create a mish mash of marvellous music! Stay tuned for next week as the Special Access Kit hits Pecky’s in Prospect!

Tutor profile: Mark Shepherd
Mark worked as as a carer and community educator with The Spastic Centre St Ives for several years. During his time there he conducted an extensive music program geared towards creating music with people with disabilities. He uses digital technology, that is, sound beams, a Banana keyboard and music software to make access to the music as inclusive and participatory as possible. He also uses many percussive instruments to involved the classes in soundscape and music creation. He is currently freelancing as a music facilitator for people with a disability with Sunnyfield disability service and various organisations across Sydney.

Accessible Arts Western Sydney is looking for a casual tutor to run weekly workshops at either Blacktown Arts Centre or Hawkesbury Regional Gallery from July- September, 2008. The suitable tutor would have skills in one of the performing arts e.g. music making, movement, dance, performance, theatre making and either experience or the willingness to work with people with a disability.
Tutors local to Blacktown and the Hawkesbury area are strongly encouraged to get in contact.

Jennifer Teo and Alison Richardson aka Accessible Arts’ Western Sydney have arrived at their Western Sydney office. They have set up shop beside the Cultural team at Blacktown City Council and have been welcomed with open arms. One of the first key initiatives that they will be working on is a series of multimedia outreach workshops in communities across Western Sydney.

On Thursday May 10th Elvis was spotted at the Accessible Arts launch! He and over 100 others packed out Blacktown Arts Centre to help celebrate the launch of Accessible Arts’ new Western Sydney project. It was encouraging to see so many people come to support the project which demonstrates the huge need for accessible and creative programs across the Western Sydney region. The launch kicked off with over 40 people taking part in a series of performance, music making and multimedia workshops. The Launch continued to buzz as more people arrived to hear all about the project, enjoy lunch and walk home with a hot pink balloon and perhaps an Elvis wig!

Blacktown Arts Centre is opening it’s newly upgraded and refurbished premises to play host to Accessible Arts as they embark upon their exciting new venture. Over four years the project aims to engage communities right across Western Sydney in innovative and creative arts opportunities.
The launch will begin with a series of workshops that are catered towards people with disability. So enrol yourself, your friend, family member or clients to have a taste of what’s install over the next four years! Get in quick as places are very limited.

Accessible Arts will embark upon their exciting new venture in Western Sydney at Blacktown Arts Centre next month. The aim is to engage communities right across Western Sydney in innovative and creative arts opportunities through outreach programs and training opportunities.
People of all abilities are invited to help celebrate at the official LAUNCH PARTY on Thursday May 10th 2007. Come along to help celebrate by participating in, or observing a workshop.
