The deadline for submitting comments and feedback to the Cultural Ministers Council discussion paper on developing a National Arts and Disability Strategy has been extended to 17 November 2008.
This opportunity to voice the needs, issues and experiences facing people with a disability when accessing the arts is an important way to contribute to this strategy. Find out how to make a difference. The deadline for submitting feedback to FaHCSIA on the development of a National Disability Strategy is Monday 1 December 2008. Disability Discrimination Commissioner, Graeme Innes has welcomed the commencement of work on the strategy. He said “For too long, meeting the needs of Australians with a disability has been done on an ad hoc and charitable basis - the Government’s new National Disability Strategy will change this.” The Commissioner urged all Australians with a disability to “grasp this opportunity to plan our move toward full citizenship.” Read more…

Members of Nepean Area Disability Organisation and AFFORD Windsor joined forces at the Hawkesbury Regional Gallery for an Introduction to Performance workshop. Facilitated by Katy Green, the group explored various ways to use movement, stillness, speech and sound in performance. Within these focus areas, the participants learnt to integrate emotion, character, shape and style into their performances. By the end of the 10 weeks, the participants had established a set of weekly drama rituals, produced confidence and creativity in their performing and formed a wonderful bond.

Ten participants from the Tuesday Night Club in Blacktown took part in a free workshop with musician and facilitator, Mark Shepherd as part of Accessible Arts’ Open Program. After a pizza dinner to line the stomach and to warm up the throat the group got hands on with the Special Access Kit to create a mish mash of marvellous music! Stay tuned for next week as the Special Access Kit hits Pecky’s in Prospect!

Mark worked as as a carer and community educator with The Spastic Centre St Ives for several years. He also uses many percussive instruments to involved the classes in soundscape and music creation. He is currently freelancing as a music facilitator for people with a disability with Sunnyfield disability service and various organisations across Sydney.
