Rural & Regional Education & Training Delivery

Training at Goulburn Regional Gallery Accessible Arts provides Disability Awareness & Access training in rural and regional areas across NSW. Having endorsed a Rural and Regional Engagement Strategy in August 2010, training delivery is a key strategy to support arts & disability in regional areas. Organisations are encouraged to utilise local networks and pool resources to share the cost of delivery in their local area.

Guest Speaker with a disability

When a rural or regionally based organisation books a training session they are required to source a local guest speaker with a disability.  The speaker can either be an artist and/or arts consumer.  The guest speaker slot is usually no longer than 30 minutes including questions and Accessible Arts offers a guest speaker fee.  This will be discussed further during the booking process.

What does it Cost?

‘Local Government takes the lead’, Museum of the Riverina, Wagga Wagga

In May 2009, 45 participants from the Wagga Wagga region attended and successfully completed TAFE NSW Accredited Disability Awareness & Access Training, to assist with improving access to the arts for people with disability in the Wagga Wagga region, and developing new audiences at local arts venues. 

The Museum of the Riverina, a Wagga Wagga City Council venue, initiated, organised and hosted the training, with Council covering costs including the provision of a venue and catering. Two sessions were delivered over two days making the most of having an Accessible Arts trainer in town. A range of staff and volunteers from across council attended, including representatives from the art gallery, the museum, the civic theatre, the library, parks & recreation and the manager of council businesses.

The session provided an opportunity to discuss and explore strategies that support ‘a whole of organisation’ approach to addressing and improving access.

‘Book & Promote’, Goulburn Regional Art Gallery, Goulburn

In February 2009, 17 participants received customised Disability Awareness & Access training in Goulburn due to the efforts of the Goulburn Regional Art Gallery who promoted the training locally, collected attendance fees and asked participants to bring food to share for lunch to cover costs. 

Staff and volunteers from a range of arts and community organisations attended the session, and the gallery sourced a local guest speaker with a disability to present. The session provided a great networking opportunity, with discussions around possible collaborations taking place.

Marketing

Accessible Arts can promote regional training through their online networks for organisations that choose the ‘Book & Promote’ model of delivery. Registrations and collection of fees is the responsibility of the organisation that hosts the training.
