Western Sydney Project 2008

Creative Programs & Initiatives in 2008

Mixed Abilities Ensemble
Mixed Abilities Ensemble

Accessible Arts has partnered up with Powerhouse Youth Theatre in Fairfield to develop a Mixed Abilities Ensemble (MAE) training program. This program grew out of the need for more skills development opportunities in the performing arts for people with a disability and will provide an integrated, supportive and professional environment - the first of its kind! Participants worked with highly experienced tutors, Angela Hill, Aimee Falzon and Claudia Chidiac to develop skills in movement, voice, performance and theatre making. Held over the course of 15 weeks at the Cabravale Leisure Centre, Cabramatta, the programs was available to people with and without a disability.

Apprenticeship Training Program

The Apprenticeship Training Program in live production, theatre and events is now in its second term. The ATP started the year off with a bang - our fantastic tutor Don had the trainees operating coloured lights, smoke machines and sound equipment. We look forward to another action packed term working alongside Julius Media and Parramatta Riverside Theatre. Alison Richardson, Creative Programs Coordinator, is already on the look out for possible job opportunities and further work experience for the trainees and will be encouraging them to get involved as volunteers at several Western Sydney youth events during Youth Week in April of this year. These guys are going to hot property once the course is completed in July!

POW WOW - Arts & Disability Forum

On Wednesday 15 October, Accessible Arts presented an Arts & Disability Forum in Western Sydney focusing on accessible and inclusive arts programs and practices.  The forum presented a fantastic cross-sector learning experience and networking opportunity for people working in the arts and/or disability sector as well as local government.

Beginning with a morning of dynamic presentations from guest speakers Steve Lee (Bankstown Day Options), Claudia Chidiac (Powerhouse Youth Theatre) and Naomi McCarthy (Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest).  Followed by a lively panel discussion with key members from the Western Sydney arts, disability & local council sectors.

Facilitated by Cheryle Yin-Lo (Cultural Connexions), panelists included Louise McCormack (The Spastic Centre), Kate Baker (Australia Council for the Arts), Jenny Bisset (Manager of Arts & Cultural Development, Blacktown City Council), Naomi McCarthy, Claudia Chidiac, and Steve Lee.
