Lynda Strong

Lynda Strong is a prolific artist, painting most days either at home or at Studio Artes in Northern Sydney. Her work is characterised by a minimal and direct aesthetic offset by a heavy reliance on bold colour. As an artist Strong possesses an acute sense of colour, and spends significant time preparing her palette before applying paint to the canvas.
Strong’s use of rich and exuberant colour reflects the positivity with which she views the close relationships she shares with the people she interacts with. Her portraiture acts as a conduit through which she relates her feelings toward others. Having attended Studio Artes for a number of years, the staff and artists of the studio are a predominant subject matter for her work. Due to the prolific nature of her creative process, Strong often paints small images on discarded pieces of paper or card and gives them away as gifts. She believes that the process of transferring these small pieces bestows good luck upon the receiver.
This focus on connecting with others also extends to the exhibition of her work. For Strong, the art making process is incomplete without an audience – a point of view that is at odds with the concept of creating art for its own sake. Her work was recently exhibited at the Callan Park Gallery at Sydney College of the Arts alongside Paulus De Groot and Hans Hartmann, two artists from the Atelier Herenplaats studio in Holland. An inherently generous artist, this aspect of her practice – the sharing of her work with an audience - is particularly gratifying for Strong.
Her work has been exhibited at Government House in Sydney, where she has also completed a short residency. The work she is developing out of this residency responds to the site’s landscape and flora and retains Strong’s minimal and stylised aesthetic and her strong focus on colour.
