Greg Sindel
21 year old Sydney artist Greg Sindel loves stories. Whether they are about superheroes, villains, monsters or robots does not matter; he just enjoys hearing stories, and telling his own.
Greg's practice revolves around writing and illustrating these stories, his previous work including an original illustrated medieval fairytale as well as his own reinterpretations of popular superhero stories. He has been drawing from an early age and is constantly creating and developing work, the process making him feel "inventive and creative". He works from home as well as Studio Artes Northside, in the Northern Sydney suburb of Hornsby.
While listening to Greg explain his current project, an illustrated story about a family of superheroes, it is apparent that he has a particular talent for character development. For each of his characters Greg has an acute and detailed understanding of their personality and motivations, as well as the specific and often complex relationships they share with other characters. While Greg says that the development of the characters took him only a few hours, the level of detail that he is able to communicate about them gives an insight into his keen understanding of human relationships, and his almost encyclopaedic knowledge of pop culture narratives.
Exhibited in AART.BOXX 09 are Greg's reinterpretations of classic horror movie posters. Created with colour pencils on black paper, the works are, in contrast to the dark and ominous subject matter, vibrant and impacting. Greg's main interests in the imagery are the story and characters. When asked why he chose these particular posters as inspiration for the work, he states that he was drawn to the "tales of terror" aspect of the imagery, which allows him to exercise his imagination, and also because he finds that, in some ways, he is able to sympathise with the characters depicted.
