As a prolific illustrator, Yu often employs pen on paper to capture images from film and popular culture. His quick gestural markings create images that evoke monumental cinematic moments.

In GI.Joe the Movie and Star Trek the Movie, Yu applies a DIY approach to moving image to express his knowledge base and blockbuster pace of visual expression.

Yu’s enduring fascination with the icons and imagery of popular culture are an expression of both his personal interest in the content, as well as a comment on the pervasiveness of media in the 21st century.

The spontaneous style and content of his works reflects the pace at which these images are released into the public memory, but in referencing classic icons from the 1970s onwards in such a 21st century medium creates an ironic didacticism for the audience.

Media artist Carolyn Teo facilitated the making of G.I Joe the Movie and Star Trek the Movie.
