Ana Nguyen
Fairfield based singer / songwriter Ana Nguyen has never been afraid to express herself.
Nguyen is strongly opinionated, and her lyrics respond to the injustice that she sees in the media, as well as in daily life. For Nguyen, simply writing down or talking about the things that anger her is not sufficient, she feels compelled to speak out. Nguyen sees her music as way of fighting against the barriers that she has experienced herself, and which she knows exist for others as well.
"I'm fighting because I want to stand up for others."
Nguyen exhibited in AART.BOXX for the first time in 2008 and will present a new work in 2009; Did you try to help?
While her influences are varied, Nguyen's music traverses hip hop and rock. She uses the force central to hip hop to discuss the issues that anger her, while rock provides an ideal outlet for her deeper thoughts and emotions.
Also passionate about acting, Nguyen says that it allows her to develop confidence in her speech and movement. She has been working with the Mixed Abilities Ensemble, a group of performers with and without a disability, and recently performed in the Ensemble's production Hard Daze, a production dealing with the issue of exploitation of youth in the workplace. Collaborating with Powerhouse Youth Theatre, the Ensemble premiered the production in a warehouse in the Western Sydney suburb of Clyde in April 2009.
"Working with the Mixed Abilities Ensemble is a great experience for me as I get the opportunity to work with all kinds of people...age, cultural background, disability, political differences...we have felt that we really wanted to leave all those differences behind and not worry about it at all and replace [them] with all the positive things instead...what I've learnt is that I have to be understanding, sensitive and to be respectful to all people".
