Bowman Yu is an artist who creates fast and fluid gestural drawings. The images he creates are a quick response to his immediate interests. The subjects of his drawings are often determined by what comes to mind when he is handling his materials and ready to draw. Often his works reference film and popular culture.
The drawing series in AART.BOXX 09 respond to Yu’s interest in Tough Guy films. Yu quotes from such films as Taxi Driver and The Godfather. Embodied in Yu's drawing practice is the vocal characterisation and commentary that is played out as each drawing unfolds.
For AART.BOXX 09, Yu will for the first time incorporate audio recordings that will accompany the drawings. These recordings form a radio play of ideas that unveils the artists' drawing process.
The Martin Scorsese Collection was developed at Sunnyfield Frenches Forest as part of their expanding arts program under the guidance of Arts Co-coordinator Gaye Flemming.
