In its fouth year, AART.BOXX 09 saw an expanded profile of artists with a disability as part of the national exhibition. In 2009, the call for submissions was open to emerging artists of all ages and not limited to young artists (30 under), as in previous years.

AART.BOXX 09 was held at Mori Gallery, an established contemporary art space located in central Sydney.

Conversations with the Artists

Meet AART.BOXX artists, gain insight into their art making processes and exchange ideas.

Stephen Colwell is a Tasmanian based artist. His work is primarily inspired by a love of collecting discarded objects and a desire to prevent them from being turned into landfill. Ana Nguyen is a Sydney based performer who writes her own rap lyrics, influenced by current political events. Ana will perform new work as part of her presentation. Lynda Strong is a painter who uses bright colours and a bold use of line. Many of her portraits have been inspired by her relationship with fellow artists and staff at Studio Artes in Hornsby. Linda Wilken is a printmaker who has expanded her practice into film. Wilken will discuss her animation Mythillogica, created in collaboration with Kevin Comty.

Clarrice Collien and David Hanson will be talking with Roomies artsworker Natalie McCarthy about their unique form of window wire tapestry. Mark H from Roomies will talk about the process of painting his highly stylized portraits. Pierre Commarmond works across mediums including, painting, computer graphics, sculpture and writing. Commarmond will discuss the process of creating his Bebet sculptures and the concepts that drive his work. Paula Mason is an artist and facilitator for the MHAD making MHAD Movie Makers Program. Mason will discuss her involvement in the production process of Exquisite Corpse. A short film featured in the exhibition.

Artists

Accessible Arts received over 85 applications for AART.BOXX 09. The selection process was undertaken over two days with more than 250 works to select from. Artists, disability arts workers and curators from the AART.BOXX committee undertook the selection process. As a collective, the selectors cited that it was a privilege to view such quality works and in most cases be introduced to new practices from around the country.
