Access takes centre stage on regional tour
A partnership between Accessible Arts and theatrical production company Critical Stages, for the NSW tour of UK modern classic A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, aims to increase awareness of access issues for audience members with disability.
A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, by Peter Nichols, is a dynamic theatrical portrait of a young couple, Brian and Shelia, struggling to sustain an emotional connection whilst raising their only child Joe a small girl who uses a wheelchair and is unable to communicate. This funny, thought-provoking classic holds a justified place in London's National Theatre's list as one of the most significant plays of the twentieth century.
To compliment the tour Accessible Arts, the peak arts and disability body in NSW, has compiled a Performing Arts Venues Access Pack. The Pack, available online, offers presenting venues comprehensive information about access, staff training in disability awareness, marketing to the disability sector, appropriate signage and legislative compliance.
Sancha Donald, Chief Executive of Accessible Arts, is delighted at the possibilities this initiative opens up. "The partnership with Critical Stages provides a wonderful chance to support regional theatres and other venues develop their audiences by addressing accessibility on a number of levels,"said Ms Donald. "The end result will be that people with disability in regional areas will more likely to attend their local theatre with the rest of the community."
Directed by Kim Hardwick and co-produced by Critical Stages and White Box Theatre, A Day In The Death of Joe Egg features a stellar ensemble cast including Genevieve Mooy (Frontline, The Dish, Brides of Christ), Jonathan Gavin (2 Pianos 4 Hands), Julia Davis (Bell Shakespeare, Wilde Tales), Drew Fairley (Bangers and Mash), Katrina Retallick and Sophie Webb.
The Performing Arts Venues Access Pack will remain online beyond this tour to provide an ongoing resource for all performing arts venues wishing to broaden accessibility.
