(En)Able Arts Forum networked approach to North West arts and disability

23/06/2010 - Sector News

Arts North West, will hold a forum on 16 July 2010 with key stakeholders, to develop a project that responds to specific areas for development in the region in relation to arts and disability.

Arts North West's proposed (En)able Arts project aims to develop a network of artists, education & training, government and community representatives that can plan and implement a strong, focused, sustainable and supportive platform for arts and disability in the New England North West. The forum will provide an opportunity for Arts North West to link partners for funding applications (due in July and August 2010) for the infrastructure, training and associated costs related to improving access and support for artists with disabilities in the New England North West.

The forum will take place from 1pm to 4pm on Friday, 16 July 2010 in Armidale. It will be of interest to artists, arts workers, disability service providers, arts organisations, and local councils interested in accessible and inclusive arts programs and practices and particularly in light of the Cultural Ministers Council's National Arts and Disabilities Strategy and the Arts Activated National Conference 2010.

As part of this forum Arts North West is inviting all 13 Local Councils, State and Federal Government representatives, artists, venues, and practicing artists with disabilities. The forum will showcase examples of ways the region can support artists with disabilities through a dedicated arts and disabilities support network;  sharing of information, resources, and opportunities; professional development for artists with disabilities; the development of arts workshop spaces and galleries and programs such as AART.BOXX (Sydney), Arts Project Australia (Northcote, Victoria), Art in the Garage (Bega); Shopfront (UTS).

The development of a dedicated Arts & Disability network is a strategic response to direct requests for support and feedback from the community as well as the key findings from Accessible Art's Speak Up consultations.

For more information or to become involved in the forum please contact Jane Kreis, Regional Arts Development Officer & Executive Officer, Arts North West Regional Arts Board, tel: 02 6732 4988 or rado@artsnsw.com.au.

Information about the venue for the forum will be made available in the coming weeks.
