About the film ‘The Waiting City’
Fiona (Radha Mitchell) and Ben (Joel Edgerton) arrive in India expecting to end the long wait for their adopted child Lakshmi only to encounter bureaucratic hitches that further delay the much anticipated union. The couple react differently to the frustrating circumstances, Fiona immersing herself in work, Ben giving way to the rhythms of the city and the easy charm of an old friend (Isabel Lucas).
Captivating in its layered depiction of the complications the couple face, the protracted sense of time and the mesmerising sensuality of Kolkata, this is a film that understands and deeply respects the cycles of life, love, death and renewal. Sydneysider Claire McCarthy, whose debut feature Cross Life premiered at SFF 2007, returns with an ambitious and perfectly realised film featuring eloquent performances from the lead actors and shimmering cinematography by ongoing collaborator Denson Baker.
