Captioned screening of 'A Good Man' at the Chauvel
Award winning feature film ‘A Good Man’ is being screened with captions at the Chauvel Cinema on 5 September 2009. This Australian documentary is the true story of a struggling Australian farmer, his quadriplegic wife and their plans to open a brothel in small country town, Inverill, NSW.
A Good Man was co-winner of the Foxtel Australian Documentary Prize at the 2009 Sydney Film Festival. The Festival jury described it as ‘a human story of huge heart told with candour and humour.’
Director, Safina Uberoi presented her experience of making the film at the Sydney Film Festival forum ‘Representation and Engagement: enriched filmmaking by cast and crews with disability'.
Safina said, “I think we all have an avoidance of disability, we call it politeness, we look away but actually we don’t want to know. I didn’t really find disability in this home, I found ability, they were able to love, able to have children, love their children, they were able to have a family.”
A 'Good Man' is the powerful and emotive story about that family and ‘is representative of the finest Australian documentary filmmaking.’
All proceeds from this captioned screening will go towards creating a fully accessible version of the film that will include audio-description for people who are blind or have low vision.
