Exploring a sensory world at the Powerhouse Museum this June long weekend

21/05/2009 - Performance/Events

Events : Sydney : 6-7 June 2009 : A program of workshops, performances and activities will enliven the senses through touch and sound at the Powerhouse Museum, celebrating the achievements of people living with blindness or low vision over the long weekend in June

The weekend program is inspired by the new exhibition, presented in partnership with Vision Australia, Living in a Sensory World: stories from people with blindness or low vision. The exhibition explores how Australians who are blind or have low vision learn, work, play sport, create art and carry out everyday household tasks. Visitors can also experience the exhibition with an audio guide available from the admissions desk. All activities free with Museum entry.

About Face

Wear a blindfold or glasses that replicate eye conditions like glaucoma or macular degeneration and create a 3D portrait using only your hands to engage with your subject. Or you can draw a portrait and have it embossed for others to feel your creation with their hands. Drop into this hands-on workshop anytime between 11.30am and 2.30pm and explore the relationship between our senses and perceptions of form.

Sounding the Museum

Experience some of the most admired objects in the Museum through music composed by Romano Crivici. Eight objects including the Strasbourg Clock, Parsons Turbine, Stuart and Son piano, Locomotive 1243 and the Australia Tapestry have inspired beautiful music for visitors to enjoy the objects in a new way.

Touch Trolleys

Get hands-on with some of the 400,000 objects from the Powerhouse collection at one of the touch trolleys around the Museum. Pick objects up and find out more about them from Museum volunteers between 1.00pm and 3.00pm every day.

Sensory Museum tours - 11.00am

Take an auditory and sensory tour and discover the highlights of the Museum with an experienced guide. The tours are for all visitors and are designed especially for people with blindness and low vision.
