AART:BOXX 2011 Artists and exhibition named
Accessible Arts is pleased to announce the artists selected to show at the AART.BOXX 11 exhibition Framing Gravity, to be held at SCA Gallery, Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney.
Framing Gravity has emerged as the title of this years’ exhibition, the fifth edition of the AART.BOXX project. ‘The title has been drawn from the wide-ranging creative and material concerns offered by the selected artists,’ said Josie Cavallaro, Arts Development, Accessible Arts, ‘as well as the social frame of disability in which the exhibition is set.’
An arts development initiative of Accessible Arts, AART.BOXX has become a significant national project and exhibition series with a focus on recent works by Australian visual artists with disability. The project also extends and challenges discourses within contemporary art by highlighting art practices informed by cultures of disability. In the development of each exhibition, Accessible Arts engages a collective of arts workers, artists and creative thinkers to develop a curatorium that encourages debate, discussion and a responsive approach at every stage of exhibition development.
The artists were selected from a national call-out for submissions. This process enables the exhibition to capture both art practices that have never had exhibition outcomes, together with artists who have an established art career. The exhibition will include works on paper, video, sculpture and ceramics.
Each of the fourteen artists exhibiting in Framing Gravity is eligible for a $4000 professional development scholarship. This one-off award highlights excellence in contemporary visual arts as well as providing an opportunity to further the career of the winning artist. The recipient of the AART.BOXX scholarship will be announced on opening night ,Thursday 20 October 2011.
