Hurstville Council awarded for access to vibrant cultural opportunities
DiscoverAbility, a scriptwriting and radio project produced by Hurstville Council, is the winner of the Local Government Cultural Awards 11 Accessibility Award. The project provided 14 local writers with and without disability, the opportunity to develop skills in writing for performance under the guidance of award-winning playwright PP Cranney.
Five scripts were performed, recorded and broadcast as DiscoverAbility Radio Playhouse on community radio station 2NBC – FM, and theme music for the radio series was also produced. The series is available to community radio stations across Australia from Hurstville City Library.
The judges also awarded a Highly Commended to Dubbo City Council for exemplary accessibility at the new Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre. This nomination also won the Cultural Infrastructure Award Division B.
Accessible Arts has contributed to the Local Government Cultural Awards since 2008 through the Accessibility Award. All entrants to the awards are required to submit information on how people with disability are included in their initiatives and are considered for the Accessibility Award. This year the judging panel considered almost 100 projects from 54 local council and shires across the state.
“The range of projects up for consideration this year was tremendous and certainly challenged the judges with their breath and scope,' said Sancha Donald, CEO Accessible Arts.
“From an outstanding field the DiscoverAbility project was finally chosen for its creation of a vibrant cultural opportunity for people with disability, its commitment to meaningful integration that transcended disability and to the ongoing outcomes expected from the project.”
