Invitation to get accessible
This April will mark 18 months since the release of Australia’s National Arts & Disability Strategy, a groundbreaking document to help arts organisations and government identify and develop priority projects to ensure that the one-in- five Australians with disability can more readily access the arts.
The Strategy focuses on four areas: Access & Participation; Arts & Cultural Practice; Audience Development; and Strategic Development. On standby to assist arts organisations address these areas is the Accessible Arts Disability Access & Awareness Training program.
As the peak body across the arts and disability sector in NSW Accessible Arts has a wealth of experience and expertise in delivering training that is interactive, participatory and results oriented.
All training sessions promote a ‘whole of organisation’ approach, encouraging staff from across all levels to attend.
Participants learn, among other things, to:
- define disability and identify it in a social context
- identify barriers faced by people with disability in accessing venues and participating in events
- identify strategies for good customer service for people with disability
- awareness of legal responsibilities in providing access for people with disability
A follow up guidance and advice service, and Access Action planning, is also available to ensure implementation of strategies post training.Previous customers include the SOH, National Portrait Gallery, Museums & Galleries Foundation, Art Gallery of NSW, STC, Historic Houses Trust, and the Museum of Contemporary Art.
