David Hansen
For David Hansen, the most rewarding aspect of art making is being able to view the final work, particularly when it is exhibited to an audience. Using window wire and wool to create tapestries, his process is to determine the basic form of the image, but to decide on the particular shapes and colour as he progresses through the work. The works exhibited in AART.BOXX were made during 2008 and 2009, taking approximately two days to complete. Trains, cars, houses, boats, trees and images of Sydney are recurrent themes in Hansen’s work.
Hansen works alongside Clarrice Collien at Roomies Artspace in Sydney. The two artists’ practices are closely aligned in technique – Collien passed on the technique to Hansen three years ago – however their work is noticeably separate in execution. Hansen’s work appears more representational than Collien’s, using distinct and regular line to create more ‘true to life’ forms. Through their aligned practices they have developed a symbiotic working relationship that is representative of the benefits to be found in collaborative processes in the visual arts.
